Title: Hope
Challenge/Prompt: #179: Pure
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada.
Summary: Someone definitely had to go back and fish that thing out of the lake.

"So that's what started all the trouble?" asked Rufus, studying it. It certainly didn't look like very much. He'd seen more impressive marbles. More impressive materia too, come to that.

Reeve nodded. "We had to send divers to recover it. I didn't really want to leave something like the White Materia lying around for anyone to find."

"What does it do, exactly?" asked Rufus. "Why make a materia to end the world?"

"That's the other one," said Reeve, shaking his head. "This is, to my knowledge, crystallized hope. Pure, unadulterated hope, the will to live."

"When it works?" asked Rufus.

Title: The Tao of Rule
Challenge/Prompt: #178: Follow
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada
Summary: Reeve and Rufus definitely have different management styles.
Author's Notes: This'd be somewhere post-Advent-Children, I think.

"You have an odd way of ruling the world," Rufus noted.

"That's because I'm not ruling it," Reeve replied quietly. "Government is handled by the individual city-states. There is no Midgar, anymore. The WRO is just there to help with problems of a more global scale."

"Protect global, rule local?" said Rufus dryly. "So that even when you're sitting on the largest military force on the planet, you're still following someone else's lead."

Reeve smiled. "I never wanted to rule, Rufus. Just have the power to lend a hand where it was needed."

"And yet," shrugged Rufus, indicating the world.

Title: Budget Talks
Challenge/Prompt: #176: Spent
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada

"We're going to be over budget for at least the rest of the year, I'm afraid," said Reeve, nudging over the attendant paperwork. "The damage to Sector Seven is extensive."

Rufus sighed, looking it over. "...Going to have to cut the space program," he notes. "Which means howling from Rocket Town. And Palmer."

"Palmer you can shut up with a box of jelly-center doughnuts," Reeve noted. "But Cid Highwind?" He shook his head. "You're going to need to give him a target, and our defense budget is overspent as it is."

"I think I'll give him Palmer," Rufus growled quietly.

Title: Benefactor
Challenge/Prompt: #176: Scream
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G
Warnings: Dirge of Cerberus hints
Disclaimer: I own nada
Summary: You always need to consider what happens after the final boss fight.

The Turks stood guard at either side as Reeve pushed Rufus' wheelchair along the cleared path. Deep Ground was just an empty shell now; he'd made sure of it, excavating as much as necessary to be positive that he wouldn't need to beg Vincent to please take an interest again.

It had involved biting back more than a few screams. No one managed biological horror to Hojo's level.

"You've made sure he has no knowledge of my involvement," Rufus asked.

"Yes," said Reeve. "I've kept your name out of it. Though since this wasn't your fault, I doubt that helped."

Title: Adverse Reactions
Challenge/Prompt: #174: Irrational
Characters/Pairings: Cait Sith, Barrett
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Stuffie Violence
Disclaimer: I own nada.
Summary: You just know Barrett didn't take the whole "Guess who has Marlene" bit lightly.

Barrett shot a clear line of bullets leading right up to the mog's giant pink feet. Cait Sith was cowering behind its mog, the little robot cat's fur poofing out in a quite realistic simulation of terror.

"Don't hurt me! Don't hurt me! I'm jus' the messenger!"

"An' yer about to be the message!" snarled Barrett. A slight adjustment of his aim and the air was full of stuffing. The mog roared, charging to attack its attacker. Cait made a terrified mew and leaped for the mog's back, sinking claws into the pink stuffing.

"It can't think without me! STOP!"

Title: Peculiar Imaginings
Challenge/Prompt: #173: Accent
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada
Summary: Cait Sith had a lot of early drafts.
Author's Notes: And really, I adore Reeve/Rufus/Cait.

Rufus watched the little cat walk on its back paws as it carefully gathered up Reeve's teacup and saucer in its front paws - hands? - and carried them over to the brewer. "...Sometimes, Reeve, your imagination is beyond deciphering.

Reeve smiled as the cat - manipulating the cup with all the delicacy it deserved - poured tea and delivered it back to him. Its tail waved quickly to maintain its balance on its proportionally tiny back paws. "Be honest," he said gently. "When - before now - have you had cause to smile?"

"But that accent is just horrible."

Title: Rebirth
Challenge/Prompt: #170 - Newborn
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus, Cloud discussed
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada
Summary: If Lifestream is both the end and the beginning, then passage through it is rebirth.

"He's a drooling moron at this point," sighed Rufus, pushing away a report. "Useless."

"Not necessarily," mused Reeve. He set a new folder down, with pages that had a curiously copied look to them. "Image captures; Cait got a look at the medical report."

"Lifestream poisoning," Rufus said shortly. "I know."

Reeve shook his head. "It's a misnomer. I studied under Bugenhagen. Lifestream is the source; we come from it and return to it. He hasn't been overloaded. He's been reset."

Rufus looked blank. "English, please."

Reeve smiled. "The slate is wiped clean. He will wake up. Wait and see."

Title: Clearing Skies
Challenge/Prompt: #169 - Star
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G
Warnings: none

Rufus found him standing on the little mini-balcony just outside his office. After hours, of course. Reeve didn't work to anything so simple as 'office hours'.

"Taking a break?" Rufus guessed, and Reeve turned away from the view to look toward him.

"It helps, when I'm tired, to remember why I'm at my desk at quarter-to-midnight," he said. "But things are changing. Look."

Rufus blinked, checked the view. The city looked much as it usually did. "...Yes?" he asked, at a loss.

Reeve smiled, pointed skyward. "I can see stars. When was the last time you saw stars over Midgar?"

Title: Build-A-Cat
Challenge/Prompt: #168 - Purpose
Characters/Pairings: Reno, Reeve
Rating: G
Warnings: none

Reno didn't bother with knocking. It was one of the perks of being a Turk. He walked into Reeve's flat, to find the man working on a model of a hand, each joint cast in bright silvery metal. The nails looked a bit long though. And curved.

"Claws?" he asked, and laughed as Reeve jumped in startlement.

"Knock, will you?" asked Reeve, waving the metal hand at him.

Reno indicated the hand. "Why?"

"The only way to have a friend in Shin-Ra is to build one," shrugged Reeve.

"I wouldn't say that," grinned Reno. "I definitely wouldn't go that far..."

Title: Leverage
Challenge/Prompt: #167: Suspect
Characters/Pairings:
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada.
Summary: Cait doesn't handle suspicion well.
Author's Notes: I honestly never liked Barrett.

"I think they know," mewed Cait, over their private comm line. "They know it's you. I'm sorry boss, I'm really sorry."

Reeve tried to put a smile in his tone, since it was only an audio line. "Calm down, Cait. Where are you all? The Icicle Inn? I think I'm safe enough in Midgar, don't you?"

"Not from Barrett," Cait replied, worried. "He thinks you'll hurt Marlene. He said he'd rip my arms off if he thought that would help. I don't want him to rip my arms off!"

"And that's why we still have Marlene," Reeve sighed. "For leverage."

Title: Hunting Season
Challenge/Prompt: #166 - Sky
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G
Warnings: Cute kittens ahoy!
Disclaimer: I own nada
Summary: You know Reeve's cure for anything would be More Kittens.
Author's Notes: So this cub has more than one tentacle. They're nearly hands!

The dark nation cub was growing well, and Rufus was wearing protective bracers while teaching it to control its tentacles properly. It had a tendency, still, to grip too hard and throttle or break whatever it tried to grab with them.

"We'll need to build it a pen soon," Reeve mused, watching Rufus' not-exactly-work. "So it can hunt on its own, under open sky."

"I know," said Rufus, almost sadly, as one of the tentacles wrapped affectionately around his protected wrist. "I'd rather go with him."

Reeve smiled. "When you're finished healing, love. Consider it our incentive program for you."

Title: Special Treatment
Challenge/Prompt: #165 - Special
Characters/Pairings: Reeve, Cloud
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Disclaimer: I own nada
Author's Notes: Probably post-Dirge...

They sat quietly at a makeshift table in Edge, drinking tea. Reeve didn't seem to feel out of place amid the ruins and wreckage; Cloud's bike seemed to serve as some kind of security blanket, the assurance of escape.

"I'd just like to be normal," said Cloud firmly. "But it never seems to happen."

Reeve's fingers curled around the fragile cup as he raised it to his lips. "I've heard that lament before," he said gently. "Ten years ago, or so, from another young one."

He set the cup down. "I will help you," he decided. "It's... hard, being special."

Title: Dining In
Challenge/Prompt: 164 - Private
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada
Summary: Can you imagine the furor if post-Dirge Rufus tried eating out?
Author's Notes: none

"Do you ever miss it?" asked Rufus, snagging a piece of perfectly prepared sushi between his chopsticks.

Reeve shrugged slightly. "Eating at a restaurant? Sometimes, yes. It's a kind of bubble, your life. Not a lot of the rest of the world gets in."

Rufus ate neatly, like a cat, quick small bites. "I'd be shot if I went out in public. Again. It wasn't the most pleasant experience. I can skip the repeat."

"And it's got nothing to do with your personal sense of privacy," said Reeve, in a tone that implied he didn't believe a word of it.

Title: Recovery
Challenge/Prompt: #162: Enchanted
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus, Cait Sith
Rating: G
Warnings: post-Dirge, I suspect.
Disclaimer: I owns nada.
Author's Notes: Didn't anyone at Square care about this loose end?

The sphere glowed greenish-white, like all the Lifestream condensed in a single shimmering stone. Cait's small feline body staggered under the dense sphere, as it set the materia down on the desk in front of Rufus.

Who picked it up as if it were the condensed wealth of the whole planet - and in a way, it was. "The white materia," he said softly. "How did you get your hands on this?"

Cait purred as Reeve scritched it behind the ears. "Cloud never wanted to see that place again, understandably. I just sent Cait back there to look for it."

Title: Slow time
Challenge/Prompt: #161: Glow
Characters/Pairings: Reno, Rude, Reeve/Rufus implied.
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada!
Summary: You have to figure that while Avalanche was in the Crater, a lot of people who couldn't be there were holding their breath.

The room was lit only by the sharp lights of LED readouts and the soft glow of materia, at this late hour. Rude stood guard at the door, Reno at the windows; the facility was secluded but not undiscoverable, and their charges had enemies.

Rufus had been recovered first, helicoptered away; Reeve had been dug, battered, from the shattered foundations of the same building. And now they lay in beds side by side, bound in bandages, intravenously fed the soft shimmer-sheen of potions.

Cait Sith did the world-saving for them all now, cut off from its father-god; the Turks guarded.

Title: Subtle rebellion
Challenge/Prompt: #160: Razor.
Characters/Pairings: Reeve
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada
Summary: Anyone note that beards don't happen often in the world of FF7?

Reeve navigated the razor carefully across his face, trimming his beard along precise lines. The President had issues with facial hair, and the compromise was always that it be 'properly maintained'. Which meant that stubble was not allowed, cut lines had to be ruler-straight, not a hair out of place.

It was, in its way, worth it. A statement that he was not in the same mold as the other department heads. There were lines. There were limits. There were rules.

Of course, none of them noticed. That was part of the point, really. It was just Reeve's little oddity...

Title: Revelations
Challenge/Prompt: #159: Fireplace.
Characters/Pairings: Reeve/Rufus
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I own nada.

Rufus kept a suite in the Shin-Ra tower; it was, as he'd noted, the most secure location on the planet (attacks by Sephiroth and Avalanche notwithstanding) and, naturally, it meant the shortest commute in the city.

What Reeve hadn't expected was tasteful warmth to dominate the decor, and a couch by a fireplace, and a bottle of chilled wine. That Rufus had style was obvious to anyone with eyes; the surprise was that he had taste as well.

He sipped the wine, and watched Rufus tend the fire, wondering to himself if anyone else ever got to see all this.

Title: Tide of Panic
Challenge/Prompt: #158: Flood.
Characters/Pairings: Reeve
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Disclaimer: I dun own anybody, really.
Summary: It had to be a scary thing, the rising of the Lifestream.
Author's Notes:

There wasn't going to be a rescue. Not in time. Reeve watched the strange green ...not a mist, not really... creep down the staircase to the holding cells. Curl along the floor. As it touched the toes of his office loafers, he knew it wasn't mist. Translucent... liquid... life.

He got up on the bench of the holding cell, watching the gentle, luminescent floodwaters rise. Listened to Cait over his headset, organizing panicked refugees as well as it could.

There wasn't going to be a rescue. Not from this, not in time. Could you drown, in a flood of life?
