"So that's what started all the trouble?" asked Rufus, studying it. It certainly didn't look like very much. He'd seen more impressive marbles. More impressive materia too, come to that.

Reeve nodded. "We had to send divers to recover it. I didn't really want to leave something like the White Materia lying around for anyone to find."

"What does it do, exactly?" asked Rufus. "Why make a materia to end the world?"

"That's the other one," said Reeve, shaking his head. "This is, to my knowledge, crystallized hope. Pure, unadulterated hope, the will to live."

"When it works?" asked Rufus.

"You have an odd way of ruling the world," Rufus noted.

"That's because I'm not ruling it," Reeve replied quietly. "Government is handled by the individual city-states. There is no Midgar, anymore. The WRO is just there to help with problems of a more global scale."

"Protect global, rule local?" said Rufus dryly. "So that even when you're sitting on the largest military force on the planet, you're still following someone else's lead."

Reeve smiled. "I never wanted to rule, Rufus. Just have the power to lend a hand where it was needed."

"And yet," shrugged Rufus, indicating the world.

"We're going to be over budget for at least the rest of the year, I'm afraid," said Reeve, nudging over the attendant paperwork. "The damage to Sector Seven is extensive."

Rufus sighed, looking it over. "...Going to have to cut the space program," he notes. "Which means howling from Rocket Town. And Palmer."

"Palmer you can shut up with a box of jelly-center doughnuts," Reeve noted. "But Cid Highwind?" He shook his head. "You're going to need to give him a target, and our defense budget is overspent as it is."

"I think I'll give him Palmer," Rufus growled quietly.

Summary: You always need to consider what happens after the final boss fight.

The Turks stood guard at either side as Reeve pushed Rufus' wheelchair along the cleared path. Deep Ground was just an empty shell now; he'd made sure of it, excavating as much as necessary to be positive that he wouldn't need to beg Vincent to please take an interest again.

It had involved biting back more than a few screams. No one managed biological horror to Hojo's level.

"You've made sure he has no knowledge of my involvement," Rufus asked.

"Yes," said Reeve. "I've kept your name out of it. Though since this wasn't your fault, I doubt that helped."

Summary: You just know Barrett didn't take the whole "Guess who has Marlene" bit lightly.

Barrett shot a clear line of bullets leading right up to the mog's giant pink feet. Cait Sith was cowering behind its mog, the little robot cat's fur poofing out in a quite realistic simulation of terror.

"Don't hurt me! Don't hurt me! I'm jus' the messenger!"

"An' yer about to be the message!" snarled Barrett. A slight adjustment of his aim and the air was full of stuffing. The mog roared, charging to attack its attacker. Cait made a terrified mew and leaped for the mog's back, sinking claws into the pink stuffing.

"It can't think without me! STOP!"

Rufus watched the little cat walk on its back paws as it carefully gathered up Reeve's teacup and saucer in its front paws - hands? - and carried them over to the brewer. "...Sometimes, Reeve, your imagination is beyond deciphering.

Reeve smiled as the cat - manipulating the cup with all the delicacy it deserved - poured tea and delivered it back to him. Its tail waved quickly to maintain its balance on its proportionally tiny back paws. "Be honest," he said gently. "When - before now - have you had cause to smile?"

"But that accent is just horrible."

"He's a drooling moron at this point," sighed Rufus, pushing away a report. "Useless."

"Not necessarily," mused Reeve. He set a new folder down, with pages that had a curiously copied look to them. "Image captures; Cait got a look at the medical report."

"Lifestream poisoning," Rufus said shortly. "I know."

Reeve shook his head. "It's a misnomer. I studied under Bugenhagen. Lifestream is the source; we come from it and return to it. He hasn't been overloaded. He's been reset."

Rufus looked blank. "English, please."

Reeve smiled. "The slate is wiped clean. He will wake up. Wait and see."

Rufus found him standing on the little mini-balcony just outside his office. After hours, of course. Reeve didn't work to anything so simple as 'office hours'.

"Taking a break?" Rufus guessed, and Reeve turned away from the view to look toward him.

"It helps, when I'm tired, to remember why I'm at my desk at quarter-to-midnight," he said. "But things are changing. Look."

Rufus blinked, checked the view. The city looked much as it usually did. "...Yes?" he asked, at a loss.

Reeve smiled, pointed skyward. "I can see stars. When was the last time you saw stars over Midgar?"
